03 MARCH 2011 / Population Council Program for Guatemalan Girls on PBS NewsHour

This video features the work of Population Council in Guatemala. The organization offers a comprehensive girls’ leadership and empowerment program that helps girls build their personal resources and teaches them critical life skills and about reproductive health and gender roles.

Indigenous girls, ages 8–18 help establish safe spaces in their communities to learn and play and work with female role models. Older girls are placed in paid professional internship programs, where they are trained to mentor younger girls on human rights, gender equality, health, education, financial capabilities, and entrepreneurship through community-based girls’ clubs.
