06 OCTOBER 2010 / “The Smile of the Child” inaugurates the Southeast European Centre for Missing and Exploited Children

With the support of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation, “The Smile of the Child” inaugurates the Southeast European Centre for Missing and Exploited Children, on the 11th of October, in the Municipality of Maroussi.

The Centre’s mission is to prevent phenomena of disappearance, snatching/ kidnapping, exploitation and illegal trafficking of children, to make a direct and substantial contribution in the efforts to locate missing children, to coordinate  transnational efforts to locate missing children who the relevant authorities believe have been moved from one country to another, to provide support to underage victims and their families, and to work together with private and public organizations, as the cornerstone of success.

The creation of the Centre, which is based on the model of its International counterpart (International Centre for Missing & Exploited Children), is an initiative by the “Smile of the Child”, which is also responsible for the Centre’s coordination. The Centre’s operational mechanism is based on collaborating with similar organizations in neighbouring Balkan countries, being in contact with the Media and activating the AMBER ALERT for the citizens’ information, running the European Missing Children Hotline 116000, working together with the authorities, providing psychological support to children and their families, etc.

The grant made by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation provided funding for the construction of the building that will house the Centre, as part of the Foundation’s actions to support children and defend their right to protection and safety.
