Soccer School for young athletes by the veteran football player, Mimis Papaioannou
21 June 2010

The Mimis Papaioannou Children’s Soccer Training Program is organizing yet another annual Soccer School, from July 23-27 in Volos. The program has been supported by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation since 2003.

The Soccer School will be attended by 150 children, ages 15-18. Participating athletes are enrolled in Soccer Academies, mostly in the Prefecture of Magnesia but also of Attica. At the Soccer School, children spend their mornings attending soccer classes, and learning about sports psychology, behavior, nutrition, etc. The afternoons are dedicated to soccer, and students compete against each other, divided in teams named after some of the prefecture’s historical landmarks. The awards ceremony will be held on the final day, when medals will be presented to the winners, and all participants will receive commemorative gifts, participation certificates and a copy of Mimis Papaioannou’s autobiography. In addition to providing children with a sports education, the School also includes visits to local museums and sites.
The Soccer School concludes the activities of the Mimis Papaioannou Children’s Soccer Training Program for the academic year 2009-2010. Besides the Soccer School, the Program includes a series of presentations in schools, conducted by Mimis Papaioannou himself, and aiming to promote the principles of fair play. The presentations take place throughout the school year, in schools across Greece, selected in conjunction with the Ministry of Education. Furthermore, the program includes organizing the annual Soccer Tournament Academy and Girl’s Soccer Tournament.
The aim of all these activities is the expansion of sports education programs, which are organized throughout Greece, so as to cultivate the spirit of noble competition in school sports.
