Soccer Tournament: An initiative by the renowned ret. soccer player Mimis Papaioannou
30 March 2010

The “Children’s Soccer Training Program,” exclusively supported by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation since 2003, is organizing for a second consecutive year the Girls’ Soccer Tournament. The Tournament will be held from April 6th to April 8th at the Panthessaliko Stadium of Volos, in the Prefecture of Magnesia.

Ninety-five athletes aged 14 -18 will take part in the Tournament. Approximately half of the participating athletes are members of the National Youth Team, while the remaining ones come from Soccer Academies, located in the Prefecture of Magnesia. This initiative, led by the renowned retired soccer player Mimis Papaioannou, encourages the promotion and development of women’s football, which is currently taking its first steps in Greece.

Besides the aforementioned activity, the “Children’s Soccer Training Program” includes a series of presentations in schools, conducted by Mimis Papaioannou, aimed at promoting the principles of fair play. The presentations take place around the country throughout the school-year, with an emphasis on schools in remote areas. All schools included in the program are selected in conjunction with the Ministry of Education. Furthermore, the program includes organizing an annual Ethos Cup Tournament and the Soccer School.  The latter is attended by young athletes from all over the country.

The aim of all these activities is the expansion of sports education programs, which are organized throughout Greece, so as to cultivate the spirit of noble emulation in school sports.
