World Alzheimer’s Day
21 SEPTEMBER 2009
On September 21st the Stavros Niarchos Foundation will recognize World Alzheimer/s Day. Alzheimer/s disease is the most common cause of dementia, a collective name for progressive degenerative brain syndromes that affect memory, thinking, behavior and emotion.
Symptoms may include:
• loss of memory
• difficulty in finding the right words or understanding what people are saying
• difficulty in performing previously routine tasks
• personality and mood changes
The Stavros Niarchos Foundation has implemented the following grants to support people suffering from dementia and help with their treatment:
2006/2008 The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA)
2006 Association Alzheimer Côte d´Azur
2005 Mount Sinai School of Medicine
The theme for World Alzheimer´s Day™ 2009 is Diagnosing Dementia: See It Sooner. Every year on September 21st, Alzheimer associations across the globe unite for this cause. Greece will honor the day with a memory walk, discussions with doctors, and speaking, TV and radio engagements.
