One hundred and forty athletes ages 21-24 will participate in this year’s Soccer School, the Mimis Papaioannou Ethos Cup, named after the renowned retired football player of the Greek national team. This annual initiative by Mimis Papaioannou and the Stavros Niarchos Foundation gives young football fans the opportunity to spend part of their summer vacation practicing sports, while attending classes on subjects including football techniques, sports psychology and behavior, nutrition, and first aid.
The Soccer School will be held from June 21st to 25th, 2009, and will include visits to archaeological sites in addition to soccer practice and games. On the last day, an awards ceremony will be held in which all participants will receive commemorative gifts, certificates and a copy of Mimis Papaioannou’s book on football.
The Children’s Soccer Training program includes a series of school presentations, conducted by Papaioannou, designed to promote the principles of fair play. The presentations take place around the country throughout the school year, with an emphasis on schools in remote areas. All schools included in the program are selected in cooperation with the Ministry of Education. The Soccer Training program’s highlights are the annual Ethos Cup tournament and the Soccer School, both organized with the participation of young athletes from all over the country.
