In this year’s “Mimis Papaioannou Ethos Cup” tournament, named after the renowned retired football player of the Greek national team, Mimis Papaioannou, 8 teams will participate, comprising 160 young athletes, aged 13-14. This initiative by Mimis Papaioannou and the Stavros Niarchos Foundation presents each year young football fans with the opportunity to spend their Christmas holidays, practicing sports and making new friends.
The tournament will be held from December 27th to 29th, 2008, from 10.00 to 16.00. On the last day, the awards ceremony will take place, while all participants will receive commemorative gifts, certificates and a copy of Mimis Papaioannou’s book on football.
Apart from the annual “Ethos Cup” tournament, the “Children’s Soccer Training” program involves the organization of a series of presentations to schools, conducted by Papaioannou, aiming at promoting the principles of “fair play”. The presentations take place throughout the school year, around the country, with greater emphasis on visiting schools in remote areas. All schools included in the program are selected in cooperation with the Ministry of Education. The program’s highlight is the annual “Soccer School” organized every June, with the participation of children from all over the country, during which students attend classes and get to compete on the field.
