Opening of the European Rowing Championship at the Olympic Centre of Marathon, Greece

The European Rowing Championship, taking place in Greece for 2008, will open on September 18, at the most modern and highly standardized facilities of Schinias, Marathon. The Championship will last for three days (September 19-21) with the participation of more than 600 athletes, from 42 countries.

The Hellenic Rowing Federation, established in 1927, includes 40 associations from all over Greece. The federation, along with FISA will welcome all participating athletes at the Olympic venue, emphasizing on the environmental awareness, a commitment that both federations are concerned with.  


According to the program, the first races will take place on September 19 while, the repetitions, semi- finals and the finals will take place on the following two days. 


 We should also mention at this point, that the European Rowing Championship, was initially organized in Italy in 1893, then it ceased in 1973 for three entire decades, to revert in 2006 signifying the natural need of the European countries, to compete in the water.  


The Stavros Niarchos Foundation, as a proud sponsor of the Hellenic Rowing Federation has partially funded the European Rowing Championship, covering technical support of the games (photo finish, timing and results) as well as fees for production of the races’ medals. In the past, the Foundation has also approved a grant, to create two rowing centers in Athens and in Chalkida, as to strengthen the sport, in the prefecture.
