17 MARCH 2008 / The Stavros Niarchos Foundation Programs for Greeks of the Diaspora

The Hellenic Parliament’s Special Permanent Committee on Greeks Abroad invited the Stavros Niarchos Foundation and the Alexander S. Onassis Public Benefit Foundation to present their programs for Greeks of the Diaspora during the session of 4th of March, 2008.

The Stavros Niarchos Foundation was represented by George Agouridis, Chairman of the Greek Advisory Committee, which addressed the double character of the Foundation as it is both international and Greek: international because it is active across the globe, and Greek because, according to its charter, it dispenses 50% of its funds in Greece.

Mr. Agouridis mentioned the great emphasis that the Stavros Niarchos Foundation has placed, since its inception, on supporting ecumenical Hellenism, either directly to organizations of the Greek Diaspora or indirectly, by supporting universities, publications, exhibitions, and other efforts related to Hellenism.

The Foundation’s representative also spoke about the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center project, which encompasses the construction and equipping of new facilities of the National Library and the Greek National Opera, as well as the creation of a cultural and educational park, a vast expanse of green in an area of 120,000 square meters.
