This is the first time that masterpieces of the great painters Klimt, Schiele and Kokoschka have been displayed in Athens. The works on view comprise the core of the “Austrian Spring,” a movement that profoundly influenced the evolution of modernism. Also on display are works of contemporaries of Klimt, Schiele and Kokoschka. The exhibit allows viewers to comprehend the creative trends and currents that gave rise to the birth of modernism, including a secular point of view that appears in many works.
The exhibit contains 70 paintings, including the seminal self portrait by Kokoschka and Schiele’s Dead Mother. The works span the conclusion of the nineteenth century up to 1920. The exhibition will be on view from October 23 to December 30th.
