Inauguration of the Medical and Occupational Treatment Shelter of Trikala

The inauguration of the Medical and Occupational Shelter in Trikala (Thessaly) took place on Tuesday, December 12 at Pili of Trikala. The Stavros Niarchos Foundation provided exclusive funding for renovating and equipping the shelter to be a safe and pleasant environment for children with special needs.

The shelter hosts twenty-eight mildly mentally disabled children between the ages of 13- 28.  They are educated at the shelter and given therapeutic treatments and dieting and integration support designed to facilitate social rehabilitation. The services are provided at no charge to the children’s families.  The unit operates five days per week during working hours, enabling parents to leave their children at a secure and healthy place during the weekdays. 
The Stavros Niarchos Foundation, (, supports activities for the 
public benefit in the fields of arts and culture, education, health and medicine, and social welfare. The Foundation’s sponsoring activity is oriented towards not-for-profit 
organizations in Greece and abroad.  
In Greece, the Stavros Niarchos Foundation provides support to endeavors that address social welfare and health issues for underserved populations, with a particular emphasis
on programs for children and the elderly. The Foundation also provides support for selected arts, culture and educational programs that promote, maintain, and preserve Greek heritage and that demonstrably contribute to the cultural life of Greece.
