In a city richly endowed with cultural resources, New York’s newest cultural institution seeks to do things a bit differently.
The Shed, opening April 5, has its sights set on multidisciplinarity, access, and audience engagement.
The new cultural center, sited on the west side of Manhattan in the Hudson Yards development, will commission works that bring together creators from every artistic discipline, from theater to sculpture to music to painting. The movable, adaptable structure that will serve as the venue for these works is a physical manifestation of the adaptable approach to the works themselves. The Shed seeks to create a cultural institution truly accessible to all audiences, who will have chances to engage in the artistic process.
A Stavros Niarchos Foundation grant supports community programs and commissions at The Shed.
