Inauguration of the Monument to the Neomartyrs of the Nation in Athens

A ceremony inaugurating the Monument to the Neomartyrs of the Nation took place on Tuesday, October 7, 2025, at the Historic Ecclesiastical Site near the Holy Asomaton Monastery, in the presence of His Beatitude Archbishop Ieronymos II of Athens and All Greece. The ceremony was organized by the Special Synodal Committee of the Academy of Ecclesiastical Arts as part of the celebrations of the Church of Greece for the 200th Anniversary of Greek Independence.
The monument, realized by sculptor Praxitelis Tzanoulinos and erected with a grant from the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF), pays tribute to the Holy Neomartyrs who contributed to the liberation of the Greek nation. During the ceremony, remarks were delivered by His Beatitude the Archbishop, the Secretary of the Synodal Committee, Archimandrite Athenagoras Soupourtzis, and the President of the Synodal Committee and advisor to SNF on ecclesiastical and broader religious matters, Protopresbyter Thomas Synodinos.
SNF Board Member George Agouridis spoke on behalf of the Foundation, saying, “At the same time, the monument stands as a constant reminder that it was only through harmony and the convergence of all forces that the seemingly impossible was achieved: the liberation of the Greek nation.”
