Greece’s National Center for Emergency Care honors SNF for health grantmaking

Feb 17, 2022
As part of an event held on February 16 by the National Center for Emergency Care (EKAV) to mark Rescuer’s Sacrifice Day, the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF) was honored for its longstanding support for EKAV, as well as for its ongoing Health Initiative.

The award was accepted on behalf of the Foundation by Chief Operating Officer Panos Papoulias in the presence of Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.

Health is one of the key areas of our work around the world, including in Greece where we have our roots. Since the Foundation’s inception in 1996, thousands of SNF grants in Greece have helped work to strengthen public health and reinforce hospital staff, as well as to ensure access to high-quality health care services for all. Our ongoing Health Initiative, which totals over $500 million and includes, among many other components, the creation of three new hospitals in Thessaloniki, Sparta, and Komotini, continues our longstanding efforts in this area.

Representative grants in health also include the implementation of the Mobile Medical Units by the nonprofit Regeneration & Progress, which recently completed 100 missions to provide care in remote islands and regions across Greece; recent renovations to create space for 175 ICU and high-dependency beds at 15 public hospitals across Greece as part of SNF’s global COVID-19 relief initiative; and the procurement of 10 linear accelerators in seven public hospitals around Greece as well as 143 state-of the-art ambulances for EKAV.
