Colorful New Life for Saint Spyridon Church of Nice

Dec 17, 2018
On Saturday, December 15th, a ceremony was held at Saint Spyridon Greek Orthodox Church of Nice to celebrate renovations made to the church and unveil a new donor plaque.

Representatives from SNF attended the ceremony at Saint Spyridon, and Chief Operating Officer Bernard Guilbaud gave a few remarks.“While the most important elements of culture are intangible,” he said, “physical spaces like Saint Spyridon are vital focal points for community. The Stavros Niarchos Foundation is proud to support the physical infrastructure that sustains communities…. The goal is not just to have spaces for community, but to make them spaces people can be proud of, through which they can feel a connection to something greater than themselves.”

The project, in which SNF has been involved since 2013, aimed to give the church a distinctive presence in the cityscape of Nice by repainting it in the typical visual style of Greek churches and raising a new church tower. SNF has provided support for the renovation or restoration of Greek Orthodox churches on four continents, including in Jordan, Egypt, and Switzerland.
