Whatever you call it, the Beautiful Game has an almost uncanny power to bring people together.
A recent soccer game at the new Madison Square Boys and Girls Club Pinkerton Clubhouse in Harlem both celebrated and demonstrated this power.
Teams from Madison and the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF) took part in a friendly match to celebrate the recent opening of the Pinkerton Clubhouse and its Stavros Niarchos Foundation SNF Field, a rooftop turf field.
Founded in 1884, Madison Square Boys and Girls Club provides young people between the ages of 6 and 18 opportunities to build skills through educational and recreational activities, grow leadership ability, and plan for their future. The opening of the Pinkerton Clubhouse allowed the organization to extend its impact into New York City’s Harlem neighborhood.
A number of recent SNF grants focus on using sports—particularly soccer—to foster respect and inclusion and improve the lives of children around the world. These include grants to the Barça Foundation for its innovative pro-social FutbolNet methodology and to the Edmílson Foundation for playing fields in communities around Brazil.
