Agiou Mina Street in Thessaloniki takes us back some 60 years, when the tram used to cross it, to continue along Tsimiski Street.
The tram may no longer exist, but with the pedestrianization of the street, the tram lines are visible again, pointing to the memory of a different time.
A celebration on Saturday, June 8, “Walking Along Agiou Mina Street,” marked the inauguration of the pedestrian street that was realized with a grant by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF) to the Municipality of Thessaloniki. There, people from Thessaloniki and elsewhere enjoyed tours, music, and a visit to the Jewish Museum, which is located on the pedestrian street.
The SNF’s support for the street’s pedestrianization and the reshaping of area surrounding the Jewish Museum is part of a €10 million grant by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF) to the Municipality of Thessaloniki. The grant aims to benefit residents and visitors by strengthening social policy and entrepreneurship, developing infrastructure for and promoting tourism and cultural heritage, and implementing technical projects.
