Before the school year starts, fellows in the University of Pennsylvania’s Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF) Paideia Program took a walk around Philadelphia—literally. The undergraduate fellows joined with faculty and staff to walk the city’s 100-mile perimeter, different groups taking different segments.

“Walking is a great way to mesh dialogue and wellness,” reflected Class of 2024 student Yasmin Abdul Razak. “It lends itself to self-reflection, reflection as a group, and what it means to be a citizen.”
The SNF Paideia Program at the University of Pennsylvania seeks to imagine a new approach to educating students as whole people and citizens, drawing inspiration from ancient Greece and the concept of “paideia,” which indicated the rearing and education of the ideal citizen.
