The Stavros Niarchos Foundation grants $500,000 to assist Japan relief and aid operations
Apr 05, 2011
The Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF) announced today that it will grant $500,000 to assist Japan relief and aid operations. The funds will be directed to the Japanese Red Cross Society (JRCS) and the Japan Society in equal grants of $250,000.
“The JRCS was the first responder to the earthquake, mobilizing within ten minutes of the quake and providing immediate services to the survivors,” said Stelios Vasilakis, Program Officer and Co-Chief of Public Affairs at the Foundation. “The Japan Society has done significant research and is vetting organizations that can have maximum impact, both in terms of immediate relief needs, as well as the longer-term recovery process. Both are outstanding organizations.”
The Stavros Niarchos Foundation typically announces grants twice a year, but has historically provided support in extraordinary circumstances, including endowments for relief efforts in Myanmar, China, Haiti and Chile.
