The 67 new grants are part of the Foundation’s regular international philanthropic activity, and are in addition to several more grants approved since the Board’s fall meeting. At the same time, the Foundation made grants as part of both its three year €100,000,000 initiative to support Greek society during the economic crisis, as well as its more recent initiative, also of €100,000,000, aimed at addressing the high rate of youth unemployment in Greece.
Since October 2013, when the Foundation’s Board had approved a series of other grants, up until April 2014, the SNF has supported new programs, totaling over €18,7 million, in its four core areas of action, Arts & Culture, Education, Health & Medicine and Social Welfare. In particular, in the area of Arts & Culture, through 25 grants totaling more than €5,500,000, the Foundation supports training programs for young artists in several countries, as well as initiatives aimed at the international promotion of Greek culture and the support of contemporary Greek artists. Similarly, in the area of Education, the Foundation approved 36 new grants, totaling more than €5,800,000, with particular emphasis on the implementation of educational programs, as well as scholarship schemes and vocational training programs, whose basic aim is to improve accessibility to knowledge. Particular emphasis was placed on programs that strive to cultivate critical thought and promote civic engagement. In the area of Health & Medicine, the Foundation invested more than €2,500,000 in a total of 8 new grants, which, among other things, support innovative healthcare models, and enhance knowledge and research, as well as improving hospital units and contributing to the fight against global health problems (HIV/AIDS). Finally, in the area of Social Welfare, the Foundation supports 30 new programs with more than €4,800,000, with two fundamental aims: to create new employment opportunities for the new generation, and to support the most vulnerable social groups worldwide, most severely affected by the consequences of the economic crisis.
Andreas Dracopoulos, Co-President of the Board of Directors of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation, stated: “Despite the fact that we are living in one of the most advanced and prosperous times in history, humanity is facing a series of critical and explosive socioeconomic challenges. We are fully aware of the fact that we cannot tackle such numerous and complex issues on our own. Our aim, with each cycle of grants we approve, is to attempt to ensure that we will achieve the greatest possible impact, but also that the grants will help all those who are most in need of support. In that respect, this cycle is no different from any of the previous ones. While we believe that every grant is important, I would like to mention three recent grants that have the potential to change the landscape for the better in their respective areas of action. In particular, our support for the creation and operation of the Center for Late Antique and Byzantine Studies at Koç University in Turkey, apart from its significance in relation to the particular field of studies, also opens up a new chapter in the relations between the two countries. The grant to create the Mobile Medical Units in Greece provides, for the first time, comprehensive healthcare services in islands and other remote areas of Greece, and may serve as a model for the provision of healthcare services in a country whose geographical distribution has so far deemed the provision of healthcare services in remote areas almost impossible. Finally, both our grant to the Yale University School of Art and the grant to complete the building of the National Museum of Contemporary Art (EMST), emphasize the importance we place on supporting creativity and creative assets, in recognition of their significant role in contemporary societies. These two grants demonstrate the Foundation’s dual approach, as they express the importance of supporting both established organizations with a long history (Yale) and organizations with the potential of developing a strong presence and role (EMST).”
