Sports Excellence launches Action for Cancer program at Attikon University General Hospital in Athens
The new service was presented by the academics and doctors who organized it, including Regeneration & Progress President and Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF) Health Initiative Advisor Dr. Panagiotis Koulouvaris, who spoke in detail about the aims, operation, and structure of the program. It will offer personalized exercise guidance for patients with malignant neoplasms, including those of the breast, the lung, the bowel, the genitourinary system, and the musculoskeletal system. The aim is to treat side effects, as well as to improve muscle strength, endurance, and mood.
Dr. Koulouvaris said, “Physical activity boosts the immune system, making it more effective in inhibiting tumor growth and reducing the side effects and toxicity of treatments, in addition to improving the effectiveness of the treatment regimen.”
SNF Chief Operating Officer and Health Initiative Managing Director Panos Papoulias, speaking on behalf of the Foundation, said, “This program has the potential to become a model of holistic care for the physical and mental health of patients, and we, at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF), look forward to the benefits it will bring to the medical community, as well as the synergies with other SNF-supported programs in the field of heath.”
The program will be implemented by Sports Excellence, under the scientific supervision of the 1st Orthopedic Clinic of the Medical School of Athens and Regeneration & Progress. Sports Excellence is a High-Performance Sports Center that offers holistic development support to pre-national, national, and Olympic teams in any sport. It is supported exclusively by SNF.
