Wardrobes with authentic traditional costumes, jewelry, furniture, textiles, and old books from the early and mid-20th century are on display at the newly renovated Sarafoglou Mansion in Veria, Greece, home to the local branch of the Lykeion ton Ellinidon and its folk collection.

On Sunday, June 1, an opening ceremony was held for the new folk exhibition space supported by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF), the first of its kind in Veria. The friendly and festive inauguration ceremony included local authorities, representatives of cultural institutions, and a large number local of guests.

Visitors can discover oral histories collected from women in Veria, which speak to profound changes and increasing freedom over the years. These join new audiovisual material and digitized versions of historical photographs.

The Mansion, in the center of the city, will also serve as a venue for lectures, cultural events, and educational programs. The creation of such a space marks an important milestone in the cultural life of the city. For the first time ever, all of these previously dispersed functions and activities have been brought together under one roof contributing substantially to the preservation and promotion of the region’s intangible cultural heritage.
