On Thursday, September 19, the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council’s Arts Center at Governor’s Island opened to the public.
The new space, supported by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF) among other, aims to bring artists and the public together to exchange ideas.
All events at the Arts Center are free and open to the public and will include performances, open studios, and workshops. The inaugural exhibitions include Michael Wang’s Extinct in New York, which features plant species native to New York that no longer grow wild anywhere in the city.
A previous SNF grant supported Rachel Whiteread’s site-specific, permanent concrete sculpture Cabin In the hills of Governors Island. Both grants fall under SNF’s wide-ranging efforts to increase public access to the arts.
