Memories of the Occupation in Greece Oral Histories Coming to Greek and German schools

Oct 02, 2019
“Memories of the Occupation in Greece,” completed in 2018, is a digital archive encompassing 93 oral histories from survivors of the German occupation of Greece.

The online portal that hosts the survivor narratives also includes further information, short biographies, and additional materials designed for both the academic community and the public.

A new educational platform building on the digital archive will be formally launched on Friday, October 4. “Memories of the Occupation in Greece” was created by Freie Universität Berlin in partnership with the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, with the support of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF).

The bilingual educational platform includes selected interviews from the digital archive supplemented with educational materials and tools to help students in Greece and Germany process what they hear.

Complementing the platform as part of the project are educational events, school workshops, and conferences. They aim to share the educational material widely in Greece and Germany, to have it integrated into each country’s educational system, and to promote use of the platform in Greek-German youth exchanges.
