Greek Language Tools Coming to U.S. Schools

May 18, 2020
The StaEllinika initiative, announced in April by the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs, serves as the platform of suite of apps for young Greek language learners developed through Simon Fraser University (SFU).

Now, through a collaboration with the Ministry of Education and Religious Affairs, the initiative will be piloted in select Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America Schools.

The clever apps, developed through the two-year Rebooting the Greek Language project and building on years of research and development, seek to engage preschoolers, elementary students, and young adults in the Greek diaspora with story-driven and game-based language courses. Rebooting the Greek Language is supported by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF) and is a project of the SNF Centre for Hellenic Studies and the SNF New Media Lab at SFU.

StaEllinika is a collaborative effort of the SNF Center for Hellenic Studies and the General Secretariat for Greeks Abroad at the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The current beta version (pending release of a full version scheduled for September 2020) has already reached 7,000 students in 106 countries since its launch less than a month ago.

The forthcoming pilot will engage students in California, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and New York.
