Greece’s Institute of Child Health debuts expanded newborn screening program

Greece’s Institute of Child Health presented the results of the pilot phase of its expanded Newborn Screening Program at a special event held on September 29, 2025. The program, which was implemented with support from the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF), enails free screening for 33 diseases for every baby born in Greece. Preventive screening enables the timely treatment of serious or potentially fatal diseases.

During the event, SNF Chief Operating Officer Panos Papoulias said, “Our partnership is not merely a grant, but a commitment to children and their families; a promise that we will continue to work towards our goal of empowering humans, from their very first steps.” 

SNF has supported the important work of the Institute of Child Health through three grants, which include the procurement of medical equipment for the expansion of its free screening program and the operation of its Day Center in Athens which provides mental health and social services to children have suffered abuse.
