Fedora Prize for Education Αwarded to the Greek National Opera

Jul 08, 2019
Yet another major international honor for the Greek National Opera (GNO)! The GNO’s Educational and Social Activities project Co-OPERAtive: An intercultural and collaborative opera hub for young people won the 2019 Fedora Prize for Education, competing with projects of organizations such as the Parisian Théâtre de la Ville, the English National Ballet, and Opéra de Lille.

At the core of the project, which is implemented with the support of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF), is the development of an opera hub for a mixed group of 60 young Athenians and unaccompanied asylum-seeking minors aged 15-17. Co-OPERAtive aims to expand opera’s appeal to young audiences and to promote social cohesion while highlighting three of opera’s basic elements: music, theater, and dance.

The project will be implemented from January to June 2020 at the Greek National Opera’s premises at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center (SNFCC). Detailed information about the project and about participating will be announced in September 2019 on the GNO website.

SNF has extensively supported the operation of the GNO, most significantly by creating its new home as part of the SNFCC. In addition, SNF has supported, with a founding grant, the Alternative Stage and the implementation of its Educational and Social activities for children, adults and people over 65 years old, people with disabilities, and refugees. As part of its support for the GNO, SNF recently announced a grant of €20 million for the implementation of a four-year programming and development plan to enhance the artistic outreach of the Opera.
