Exhibition by 2025 Miró Prize winner Kapwani Kiwanga opens in Barcelona
Changing States, the first retrospective in Spain by 2025 Joan Miró Prize winner Kapwani Kiwanga, is on at Fundació Joan Miró in Barcelona now through September 13, 2026. The Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF) provided lead support for the exhibition and the Prize, which recognizes an artist whose work resonates with the values and honors the legacy of 20th-century Barcelona-born artist Joan Miró.
Changing States includes a number of works produced specifically for this exhibition. Kiwanga was selected by the Prize jury for her “ability to transform complex historical and social processes into poetic and conceptually rigorous forms that are capable of establishing a profound dialogue with Miró's radicalism.”
At the opening, SNF Program officer Aurélie Avice said, “For us at SNF, civic engagement and public dialogue are central to our grantmaking, and we believe art can be a powerful catalyst for both. This exhibition exemplifies that, not only through the works themselves but also through educational programs that, as happens every year through the Joan Miró Prize, engage young audiences….
“This year’s edition of the prize is also especially meaningful as it coincides with two milestones: the Fundació Joan Miró’s 50th anniversary and SNF’s 30th. These anniversaries mark long-standing commitments to the public good and to partnerships that help culture reach wider audiences.”
