At “Goals for Goals,” a Soccer Tournament with a Mission

Sep 25, 2019
Four years after the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals were set, a soccer-based event sets out to embody their spirit.
Co-organized by pro-social soccer powerhouse the Barça Foundation and the sustainability-driven Organization Earth, the “Goals for Goals” tournament will draw a range of players, from schoolkids to the National Homeless Team. A total of 17 teams will take part, representing the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals set for 2030. The Goals aim to ensure a sustainable, livable future for all humankind.

Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF) staff will play with Organization Earth’s team, Hope Refugee FC, in a game representing Goal 17—inclusive partnerships built around shared vision. One such partnership, between SNF and the Barça Foundation, centers on Barça’s FutbolNet methodology, which uses soccer and other sports activities as a platform for promoting inclusion, integration, and mutual respect among young people, including refuges and local host populations.

The event will take place in Athens on Sunday, September 29 as part of the European Week of Sports.
