Are young people turning toward authoritarianism? A new report inquires
A new report from the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF) Agora Institute at Johns Hopkins University and International Republican Institute looks at how young people view authoritarianism. Do they increasingly see it as an acceptable form of government? Could it even be a preferable one for them? And why?
By assessing dozens of existing surveys and conducting new surveys and interviews that reflected the views of young people from Kyrgyzstan to Timor Leste to Panama to the Gambia, the researchers, including SNF Agora Institute Fellow Scott Warren, offer insights into these questions. Read the report to see what they uncovered.
The report was produced in collaboration with Generation Democracy and Democracy Moves, an SNF partner.
SNF Agora seeks to serve as an open platform for good-faith actors from across the political spectrum to explore how to strengthen the health of democracies and promote engaged citizenship. Its events and research welcome a huge variety of perspectives to help the public understand what’s going on in the present and act for a more democratic future.
