In the March installment of the DIALOGUES series, we embark on a retrospective journey on the history of rebetiko. Musicians, academics, and craftsmen of musical instruments discuss the roots and influence of rebetiko in the world music scene, its sociological value, its stigmatization and relatively recent destigmatization, as well as the cultural trends that have transported it across the globe. The event will take place on March 27.
This time DIALOGUES travel to Syros, birthplace of Markos Vamvakaris, a leading figure in the rebetiko movement.
Speakers to the event include*:
Dimitris Mistakidis, Musician – Teacher, School of Arts, Department of Traditional Music, University of Ioannina
Giorgos Kokkonis, Assistant Professor, Department of Music Studies, University of Ioannina
Karolos Tsakirian, Luthier
Tanya Veanous Tsakirian, Luthier
The discussion between the speakers and the public will be coordinated by journalist and iMEdD Managing Director Anna-Kynthia Bousdoukou.
Meet the Tsakirian family, Greek-American luthiers for four generations with roots going back to the great Armenian artisans.
After the discussion, live music by Dimitris Mistakidis and friends, plus students and teachers from the Syriot music school “En Chordais & Organois” (The Great School of Markos), will follow, immersing us in the history of rebetiko.
