To support the digitization and electronic accessibility of 12th century manuscripts, written during the tenures of two important abbots of the Engelberg Cloister, Frowin and Berchtold. The collection is unique among the Swiss Collections, and it shows how a cloister library was developed in a systematic way during the high middle ages.
The University of Fribourg, a teaching and research academic institution, was founded in 1889 by the Canton of Fribourg and has 10,000 students from Switzerland and abroad. The Medieval Institute of the University of Fribourg runs the E-codices initiative (the Virtual Manuscript Library of Switzerland), which begun as a pilot project in 2005. The initiative makes medieval and early modern manuscripts accessible through a digital research library maintained in four languages (D/F/E/I).
