Restoration

The grant supports completion restoration works at the Cathedral Church of Athens.

The Cathedral Church of the Annunciation of Theotokos, popularly known as the “Metropolis”, is the Cathedral church of the Archbishopric of Athens and all Greece. Construction works of the Cathedral began on Christmas Day in 1842 with the laying of the cornerstone by King Otto and Queen Amalia and completed in 1858. The designs of the Cathedral were made by the renowned architects, namely Hansen, Zezos, Boulanger and Kalkos. The decorative aspects are no less impressive, incorporating pieces from derelict Byzantine churches and churches razed for archaeological reasons.
