For research projects on reversing deafness. The Bionic Ear Institute researched how degeneration of the hearing nerve can be prevented and how regeneration can be made possible.
The goal is to provide improved quality of sound to recipients of the Bionic Ear, a cochlear implant that has restored hearing to tens of thousands of people worldwide. The research sought to establish the safety of long-term application of growth factors to the inner ear.
This research is likely to not only produce high fidelity cochlear implants, but also to restore nerve function in spinal cord injuries. In the longer term, it may be possible to reunite the hearing nerve with inner ear hair cells when hair cell regeneration is possible.
