Rocking the Boat

Program support
For Rocking the Boat’s capital project to transform a warehouse in the South Bronx into the organization’s permanent home.

The new location is adjacent to Hunts Point Riverside Park and will provide increased space for boatbuilding programs and direct access to the water for on-water programs.

Support will also provide for expanding the apprentice program in 2009 to include maritime job skills.   The job skills program gives student alumni the opportunity to prepare themselves for the academic and working worlds by becoming apprentices. The maritime job skills program activities will focus on boat repair and maintenance. All apprentices at Rocking the Boat receive career and college counseling from social workers on staff.

Founded in 1996, Rocking the Boat works with low-income high school students in after-school and summer programs. The organization teaches students how to build boats from scratch and how to row and sail them. The students use the vessels they build to learn about environmental restoration issues in the Bronx and East Rivers.  The community rowing program provides free, weekly opportunities to row on the Bronx River to hundreds of community residents of all ages.
