PEN American Center

Program support

The grant supports programs for underserved groups, including the PEN Prison Writing Program, a workshop for labor union workers (Worker Writers Program) and a strengthening of partnerships with diaspora and ethnic communities to provide PEN’s signature programming within the communities they wish to serve.

PEN American Center was founded in 1922 and is the largest and most active and influential of the international PEN centers. For more than 90 years it has been a Who’s Who of American literature, bringing together this country’s greatest writers with their most distinguished international counterparts for seminal discussions and debates on critical issues spanning culture, the arts, philosophy, and politics. PEN American Center is the only organization in the United States dedicated to both the celebration and the defense of free expression.
