The Holy Monastery of Koutloumousiou, which is ranked sixth out of twenty in the hierarchical order of the monasteries of Mount Athos, was founded in the eleventh century and is located near the capital of Mount Athos, Karyes. Very little is known about the founder, who was supposedly a descendant of the aristocratic Koutloumous family from Asia Minor. The monastery’s first orderer was the Byzantine Emperor Alexios Komninos. The monastery flourished during the fourteenth and eighteenth centuries. During the eighteenth century, the number of monks exceeded 70. The monastery currently houses 30 monks.
