In June 2012, the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Board of Directors, in recognition of the extraordinary collective efforts and fighting spirit demonstrated by the Greek National Football Team in the European Cup in Poland and the Ukraine, announced a €1,250,000 grant for philanthropic causes in its honor.
In particular, the Foundation has allocated €50,000 in the name of each of the 25 members of the National Team, in support of philanthropic causes of their choice, all across the country. The National Team grants are intended to provide relief to population groups that have been particularly affected by the current crisis, such as children, people with disabilities, and the elderly.
Grants have been made to a total of 48 not-for-profit organizations chosen by the members of the National Team. Each grant has been made directly by the Foundation to each individual non-profit, both in the name of the respective football player or coach who suggested it and the whole of the national team.
