Greek Composers’ Union

Concert series

For financing the eighth cycle of the “Music of the World” concert series, in cooperation with the Goethe Institute in Athens, which will also host the series. The concerts will take place from November 2009 to May 2010 and will present chamber music by a mixture of Greek, German and international composers.  The works will be performed by the Hellenic Ensemble of Contemporary Music.

The Greek Composers Union was founded in 1931 with the mission of protecting and promoting the work of Greek composers in Greece and beyond. It currently has 208 members, including distinguished Greek composers such as Manolis Kalomiris, Iannis Xenakis and Dimitris Mitropoulos. The Union organizes annual concert series, Pan-Hellenic composition competitions, young composers’ workshops, lectures and congresses, and promotes the publication and release of scores and CDs. It also publishes the bi-monthly magazine “Polytonon,” which promotes Greek and international contemporary music to a wide international public and acts as a communication channel for the Greek musical community.
