For the International Cooperation Committee and its project, "Novel methods of knowledge transfer in the field of cardio-thoracic surgery," which includes high-level teaching courses in less developed countries, and for the Multimedia Manual of Cardio-Thoracic Surgery, a Web-based collection of detailed descriptions of cardio-thoracic surgical procedures.

The European Association for Cardio-Thoracic Surgery was founded in 1986 by a team of European surgeons and now counts members throughout the world. The objectives of this association are to advance education in the field of cardiothoracic surgery, to promote for public benefit research into cardiovascular and thoracic physiology, pathology and therapy, to correlate and disseminate the useful results of such research, to encourage information exchange among cardio-thoracic surgeons, and to provide appropriate professional advice to European authorities on matters concerning cardio-thoracic surgery.
