For the support of the Ephorate’s 2012 underwater research in the “Mentor” shipwreck, one of the ships that Lord Elgin used to transport Greek antiquities to London. The shipwreck is located in the southeastern coast of Kithira.
The Ephorate of Underwater Antiquities was established in 1976 and it reports to the Greek Ministry of Culture & Tourism. Its objective is to locate, protect and promote all underwater (sea, lakes, rivers) findings in Greece. Since 1976, they have collaborated with Greek and foreign Scientific Organizations and underwater explorers, such as J. Y. Cousteau in order to conduct numerous underwater studies and excavations in ancient and contemporary shipwrecks, underwater villages and ports.
