The Reading Society was founded in 1836 by a group of intellectuals whose principal goal was to stay informed about European scholarly and cultural developments. The core of the Reading Society is its main reading room and its valuable library, which includes the important holdings in the Ionian Island collection and the valuable Guilford Archives. The Reading Society Library offers its services to members as well as to scholars and intellectuals. Since the establishment of the Ionian University in 1984, the Library is also open to the local academic community.
