Corfu Island Archives

For equipment and an architectural study to determine how to prevent heat and humidity from destroying the documents.

The Corfu Island Archives were established in 1443, when Corfu Island was still under the rule of the Venetians. They are located in a very old, historic castle in the center of Corfu Island.  The Venetians had good organization skills and an interest in recordkeeping, and they maintained and regularly updated the records. Even after the union of Corfu with the rest of Greece, this recordkeeping process was continued. As a result, the archives have documents dating from 1320 through the modern era.
