Congrégation des Cisterciens de l’Immaculée Conception

Restoration

The grant supports the restoration of the Chapel Saint Sauveur, a beautiful octagonal edifice built in the 11th century on the island of Saint Honorat. This restoration is part of a global restoration project, which also includes a fortified monastery tower. Both buildings are significant for their architecture and history. The archaeological excavation uncovered the existence of the foundations of a chapel dating from the 5th century, on which the present chapel is built. The interior of the chapel is closed, as the excavation needs to be preserved.

The Congrégation des Cisterciens de l’Immaculée Conception, created in 1980, owns the island of Saint-Honorat and the Abbey of Lérins. The Abbey, housing 22 monks, is renowned as a center of learning and theology.
