New Publication about the Architectural Heritage of Athens by MONUMENTA

Feb 19, 2021
Tracing the Architecture of Athens. Recording and documenting buildings from the period between 1830 and 1940”. Read about the 1,620 buildings documented by MONUMENTA through its research over the last 6 years with support from the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF).

Neoclassical, eclectic, art nouveau, popular, and 1930s modernist edifices. Before 2013, these buildings—those that survived the massive demolitions of the ‘50s and ‘60s—remained hidden gems. No systematic attempt was made to record and document them until the nonprofit MONUMENTA stepped in with support from SNF.

Beyond on-site research, the MONUMENTA team recorded the testimonies from those who lived in the buildings and the engineers who designed them, creating dozens of records. The book comprises three sections: a) presentation of the buildings’ recording and documentation programs, the methodology, the values of the recording, b) texts on the architecture of Athens and urban green spaces and c) photographs of the buildings.

In bookstores now.
