The Stavros Niarchos Foundation supports the Academy Award Nominated Short Subject Documentary, 4.1 Miles.

Directed by Daphne Matziaraki, 4.1 Miles documents efforts by a Greek coast guard boat to save of refugees from drowning at sea during their crossing of the 4.1 miles strait that separates the coast of Turkey from the Greek island of Lesvos. 

Through its captivating footage, the film is a dramatic tribute to the plight of refugees and to the relentless efforts of thousands of people, who have and continue to help them in their perilous crossing from Turkey to Greece.

The film was created by Daphne Matziaraki as her thesis project for her Master’s degree from the UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism. It premiered in September 2016 as part of The New York Times’ Op-Docs, the newspaper’s forum for short, opinionated documentaries.
