The European Day of Parks will celebrate its 100th anniversary this year. The first European Park was established in Sweden in 1909. The date has great symbolic value and is celebrated throughout Europe through the initiative of the European Federation of Parks. The theme chosen for the 2009 event is "Youth – The Future of Our Parks".

Of all European capitals Athens has the least green space, with only 2.5 square meters of open space per citizen. The Foundation is currently engaged in planning for an important new green space for Athens, the Stavros Niarchos Park at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center. The park will occupy 120,000 square meters, will provide a much-needed green area in Athens and facilitate civic participation and sustainable community development.
