For reforesting 136,000 square meters of Penteli mountain, located on the outskirts of Athens. From a geological point of view, Penteli is considered to be among Europe´s most ancient mountains. The reforestation program will last three years in order to protect the trees and secure their proper development.
The reforestation will involve planting 10,000 trees in an area that was burned in 1997 and subsequently became eroded and degraded. Reforestation is necessary for regeneration of the ecosystem, improvement of living conditions, carbon sequestration, and for the benefit of the hydrological cycle. Athens has less “green” than any other metropolitan European city.
