The Macedonian Museum of Contemporary Art was established in Thessaloniki in 1979. In 1982, it was granted to use a wing of the Filkeram-Johnson factory in order to house its collection. In 1984, the late Alexander Iolas, a well-known collector, donated works from his private collection in order to form the museum’s core collection.
