Construction

Indicates grants supporting Greek or Greek-related programs
For constructing a Patriarchal Sacristy in the basement of the Patriarchal Palace, which contains a large cistern dating back to the Ptolemaic age.  The ancient cistern was used to gather rain water. The space will be reconfigured into a Sacristy that conforms to contemporary museum standards.  The Sacristy will provide space to preserve and display 150 items of historical interest and significant ecclesiastical heirlooms.

The Church of Alexandria was founded by the Apostle Mark the Evangelist in the 1st century. The Greek Orthodox Church of Alexandria is the religious leader for over 1.5 million followers across the African continent. Today, 18 Holy Churches and six dioceses in 24 religious districts fall under its auspices. The current primate of the Church of Alexandria is His Beatitude Theodoros II, Pope and Patriarch of Alexandria and All Africa. The Greek Orthodox Church of Alexandria aims to preserve Hellenic heritage, to promote education, and to assist the underserved parts of the population through philanthropic activities.
